More than just advice
My career
Since 1997, I have been working as a financial adviser at various institutions specialising in private banking for high-net-worth clients.
In 2015, somewhat earlier than I had planned, I decided to set up a business and begin my professional career as a self-employed entrepreneur. I wanted to provide financial advice independently, prioritising my clients’ interests without any commercial commitments, using an agency model which I considered best suited to my client base and the market.
From adviser to financial educator
Over time, I realised that my work should not be limited to making recommendations and implementing proposals. I felt it was important for my clients to understand the why from every decision, a vocation as a financial educator took root within me.
In my 27 years’ experience, I have observed that many clients lacked financial literacy, which led to haphazard decisions, inefficient investments and procrastination when it came to making decisions. Financial literacy alone was not enough: what was needed was support that would generate changes in habits and help to improve quality of life.
Meeting with the AEPF
During this search, I met the Association of Financial Educators and Planners (AEPF), which opened my eyes to a different approach:
-
To help the client get to know themselves.
-
To go beyond purely financial matters.
-
Thinking about what to do with the money.
-
Avoid improvising.
-
Investing effectively to achieve key objectives.
-
Avoid getting into too much debt.
This led me to become certified as a high-calibre educator and financial planner, based on recognised technical standards: UNI 11402 e ISO 22222.
Technical quality standards
Technical standards are documents that define processes and services in accordance with standards that have been tested and agreed upon by experts. Although they are not mandatory, they guarantee quality, impartiality and legal certainty. Their application in financial education enables the provision of a service independent and free from conflicts of interest.
My career choice
I have decided to combine my two roles:
-
Financial adviser employed by a firm, regulated under MiFID II.
-
Educator and independent financial planner, on the demand side and with no conflict of interest.
The AEPF offers me the opportunity to delegate the analysis of quotes from financial intermediaries, whilst ensuring the independence required by the technical quality standard.
